What the heck, it is bad enough I have to allocate as many resources as I have to avoid being inundated with spam in both email (6000+ a month) and blog (2500+ a month), but now something I've helped to build is being abused.

I guess the criminal element of the world just is not content with crapping in their yard, they have to crap in everyone else's too, even when there isn't any money involved.

I had heard about this early last week, Carl came up with a clever solution for CPDN. Hopefully this won't be all that common.

This comment is rather delayed, apologies. On Climate Prediction we are relieved that the vast majority of forum comments on the Wate affair have been supportive and positive about how things were handled by BOINC and the projects.

It was also nice that the Team Italia members who uncovered the scam came onto the boinc_dev forum and told us what they could.

Some DC's simply deleted/disabled the accounts and the related device registrations, thus drying up the flow of data to the trojaned clients..... just know what u download!

I'm sadly about the things happend now!
It looks like Predictor@Home did nothing against Wate.
His account is still active there.
Today many user talk in some fora about a censorship in Predictor's messageboard. Postings/treads are deletet there if someone ask why Wate's account is still up and running at Predictor.
...critical participants are blocked!
That's not a way to handle the probem, the opposit is happend, big new problems are growing up...!!!

Rom, what is to do???
The good name of BOINC will run in a danger request...

well the problem is there's real central governing body" so BOINC projects can handle the Wate's of the world in different ways. It was pretty easy for CPDN (the way we do credits) to just zero-out Wate & the machine's affected. I think all projects scrambled Wate's auth info so that current and future machines will not be able to connect. And I guess that's about it. I had numerous emails from people wanting to have Wate sought out by the CIA, FBI, MI5 etc, but there's really nothing we can do since it was all external to the BOINC system (i.e. it's the fault of people who downloaded dodgy software). It's just a shame that BOINC & BOINC projects can be guilty by association with someone like Wate; although it's reassuring that it was nothing exploited internally in the software and was more a "social exploit."
